Margaret Gearhart, also one of Helen and Lily’s friends, boarded at Loretto Academy with Lily. Helen, however, needed to remain at her family farm, assisting her father.

Helen writes about falling in love with Lily in the summer of 1921. She also notes that Lily’s first meeting with her suitor, Arthur, whom Lily would eventually marry, took place in September 1922.
